Lance Friesz
Lance Friesz is the grandson of our Casta del Sol neighbors, Jim and Ethel Chavis.

Lance Friesz has met his childhood dream of being a professional soccer goalkeeper.  At the age of eight, his first American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) coach was John Cappaelletti, a Heisman trophy winner from Penn State.  John put Lance in as a goalie, the position that he has excelled in ever since.

Lance learned early on that life was not going to be easy.  It would have been very easy for him to muddle through life, taking whatever was available to him.  Through the support of his family, he chose not to let set backs and disappointments to prevent him from not reaching his goals.  Lance has learned that, with the right mental attitude, he can do what his critics say is not possible.

Lance started his athletic career early in Track & Field and American football as well as in soccer.  He has played for soccer teams up and down the Southern California coast ending up at the University of San Diego, winning numerous honors throughout this time.  He graduated with a Business Administration degree from USD.

Lance signed on a goalkeeper for the Los Angeles Galaxy in time to start the 2007 MLS season.  In addition to his playing field position, Lance will be representing the US soccer program in Germany, England and Puerto Rico.  Lance is a major league player in a major league world.  We are blessed to have Lance Friesz as an ambassador for the United States through our local Major League Soccer team.
Goalie2 May 13, 2007

Photo was taken May 13, 2007 during competition between the "Reserve" Teams for New England Revolution and L.A. Galaxy.  Galaxy won the match 2-1 on Sunday morning at Home Depot Center.  A "Reserve" team is comprised of bench players for the most part.   Major League Soccer or MLS has been arranging "Reserve" team games for several years now to ensure bench players obtain real game time which is essential to player growth.

Lance also received an "Assist" which is worth one point and is awarded when a player sets up a goal by another player.  In this case, Lance as the goalkeeper, employed a quick release to Forward, Mike Caso who then delivered the ball to another player, Santino Quaranta, who scored the goal.  An assist was awarded to both Mike Caso and Lance, with the goal given to Santino.  It is most unusual for a goalkeeper to receive an assist – but Lance is unusual!

Sir William Dean:  “The great are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.  It is about courage and endurance, and duty, and mateship, and good humour and the survival of a sense of self-worth and decency in the face of dreadful odds.”
