Surfing the Web

When one buys a 60 watt light bulb in a grocery store, one expects for the bulb to fit the lamp socket at home.  This was not always true and still is not true for immature products.  The World Wide Web is an immature product.  In a free economy, every entrepreneur tries to be the "firstest with the worstest."

The solution would be standardization, except the WWW is a moving target and cannot be standardized yet.  Microsoft and Netscape were in a head-to-head battle to impose their browsers upon as many computer users as possible.  Both invented special features (tags) to make their browser the "best."  Now we, our browsers, our ISP and the website Host must live with this potpourri.

Coding Web Pages

The next problem is that programmers are not permitted to "code" the web pages.  Programmers must use HTML, or a derivative of HTML, to tell the browser what is wanted.  The browser interprets the intent of the programmer and then decides how to do the implementation  Surprise, all implementations are not identical.

Worse yet, all computers are not identical.  In addition, we can personalize our settings to those that are most pleasing to us.  So every computer and every browser talk a different dialect and yet our web providers and browsers allow us to talk with each other with amazing ease considering the complexity of the task.

You Can Help
